Attachment-Focused Therapy

Starting in the 1960s, John Bowlby, Mary Ainsworth and Mary Main started watching how the interactions between infants and parents would impact the rest of a person’s life. We all have deep core, biological needs for love and safety combined. Today, with modern technology we’ve been able to track the development of the brain starting in utero and blooming especially in infant and toddler years, reflecting back accuracy and refining the work they first developed.

Whether for adults or kids, key elements of love and trust come through a sense of dependable consistency and closeness. We all need a safe base we can come back to, combined with sensed freedom to be our own-selves and explore the world.

Sadly, because the world is painfully broken, we operate off of the presupposition that every single person breathing experiences some level of attachment wounding.  Whether inconsistency of closeness or obsessive closeness combined with too many goodbyes, a lack of deep nurturing or emotional presence, or simply chaos or lack safety, we all develop Attachment Styles that tend to follow a basic pattern of relating to others, though we are each unique in the details of how we experience and act that pattern out.

The good news is that Attachment Focused Therapy opens up ways to help grow new pathways of Secure Attachment at any age. The goal is to create healing in brains and relationships so that the internal experience of bonding as well as the style in specific relationships can be re-set to feel safe, connected, and more consistent.
